Prominent ear correction (Pinnaplasty)

Pinnaplasty is a procedure to correct the position of the ears. Prominent ears primarily affect young children and teenagers however without treatment can still be prominent in adults. Ear correction involves pinning the ears back to reduce them sticking out.

What is involved?

Pinnaplasty is not recommended in children younger than 5 years old as the ears are still growing at this stage.

For older patients this procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic (numbing injections with the patient awake) using incisions made behind the ear to expose the cartilage beneath the skin. This cartilage can then be manipulated by careful placement of sutures to correct the deformity. Occasionally, small amounts of this cartilage may be removed to allow the ears to sit closer to the head.

How long does the procedure take?

This procedure will typically take 60-90 minutes to complete.

Are there any risks?

All treatments carry risk, most commonly in surgery there is a risk of bleeding, infection, swelling/bruising or unsightly scarring. Ears may be tender following treatment and a scar will be present but usually fades of the course of a few months. Further risks will be discussed in detail during the consultation.

What aftercare is provided?

As per all procedures, clients will be given personalised advice regarding after care however following the procedure you may be given a head bandage to keep the incisions clean and dry. We advise to avoid washing hair until the bandages are removed and to use a headband for a few weeks to protect your ears during sleep.

Split or stretched ear lobe correction

Split or stretched ear lobes can occur following trauma or after use of heavy or stretching earrings. This can lead to an obvious split or widening of the piercing hole which unfortunately means jewellery cannot be worn. This treatment aims to reconstruct the ear lobe.

What is involved?

Using a local anaesthetic to numb the ear lobe the edges of the split or piercing hole will be removed and then, using the fresh edges, will be re-joined using sutures.

How long does the procedure take?

Timing of the procedure will vary depending on the complexity and varies from person to person.

Are there any risks?

All surgical treatments carry risk, most commonly in minor surgery there is a small risk of bleeding, infection, swelling/bruising or unsightly scarring.  There may be a small chance of ear lobe asymmetry or numbness.

What aftercare is provided?

As per all procedures, clients will be given personalised advice regarding after care. Following the procedure, we advise that patients avoid touching the earlobes as they heal and refrain from wearing jewellery in the ear lobes until the healing process has been completed.

Scar Revision

Scars can form every time we damage our skin via cuts, tattoos or surgical procedures. Though scars are a result of the body’s natural repair process they can be rather large, thick and appear unsightly. We can offer various treatments including scar revision surgery to correct unwanted scars.

What is involved?

Scar revision can be completed under local anaesthetic where the old scar is removed using incisions and re-stitched usually within the body’s natural creases to hide the new scar line. Specific scar techniques such as a Z-plasty can be performed to change the direction of a scar.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of the procedure will vary depending on the treatment required.

Are there any risks?

All treatments carry risk, most commonly there is a small risk of bleeding, infection, swelling/bruising or unsightly scarring. Certain skin types are higher risk of developing prominent scars such as hypertrophic scars (thick and red) or keloid scars (very thick scars that can be raised from the skin). These scars will be assessed in clinic during consultation prior to treatment and can require other treatments such as steroid injections. Further risks will be discussed in detail during the consultation.

What aftercare is provided?

As per all procedures, clients will be given personalised advice regarding after care.
